Apr 6 - Apr 30 - Du Texas à New York/ From Texas to New York City
Aprés quelques heures de démarches administratives, un petit jeu de questions/réponses avec l'immigration et une fouille intégrale de Ticar, nous voici de retour aux Etats-Unis avec un nouveau visa de 3 mois en poche... Et quand on pense que tout est bon, on a eu droit à un passage de Ticar aux rayons X à un poste de 'Border Patrol' 50km aprés la frontière... Ben oui, passer 3 mois aux Mexique, forcément ça paraît louche!
Aprés notre longue remontée du Mexique, nous avons décidé de nous poser 2 jours à Corpus Christi, plus précisément au parc national de Padre Island, un banc-de-sable-île le plus long du monde à l'est de la ville. Il y avait beaucoup de vent et de nombreuses algues s'étaient échouées sur la plage mais on a retrouvé la mer et la plage avec grand plaisir...
English: After a few hours of administrative procedures, a little game of Q&A with immigration and a full search of the RV, here we are, back in the US, with a brand new 3 month visa... And when we started thinking we were all set and ok, we were stopped by the border patrol about 30 miles after the border and the RV had to undergo a full Xray... I guess they thought that spending 3 months in Mexico sounded a bit suspicious!
After our long drive up Mexico, we decided to settle down for 2 days in Corpus Christi and more specifically in Padre Island National Park, the longest undeveloped barrier island in the world located east of the city. It was very windy and most of the beaches were covered in seaweed but we were very happy to be back at the seaside...
Nous nous sommes ensuite rendus à Houston, où nous avons été accueillis par nos amis Percy et Amalia ainsi que leurs 2 filles Anya et Alyssa. Nous avons passé un week-end trés agréable en leur compagnie, nous avons tout d'abord été au musée des enfants de Houston, puis le lendemain, Percy a emmené Chris pêcher dans le golfe du Mexique; Amalia, sa maman et moi avons passé une chouette soirée entre filles et les enfants se sont entendus à merveilles. Ils nous ont également emmené à la plus grande église des Etats-Unis: Lakewood Church, une église située dans un stade assez grand pour accueillir ses 40,000 fidèles hebdomadaires, avec spectacles de gospel entrecoupés de prêches motivants... assez incroyable à voir!!
English: We then headed to Houston where we were welcomed by our friends Percy and Amalia along with their 2 daughters Anya and Alyssa. We spent a really nice week-end with them... We first went to the Houston children's museum, then the following day, Percy took Chris on a fishing trip in the gulf of Mexico; Amalia, her mom and I enjoyed a fun 'girls night out' and all the kids got along just great. They also took us to the biggest church in the US: Lakewood Church, a church located in a stadium big enough to welcome its 40,000 weekly members, with great gospel between very motivating preaches... a pretty amazing experience!
Le lundi, nous avons visité le Space Center de Houston, un centre dédié à l'espace situé sur le site de la NASA. Nous avons passé la journée à profiter des différentes attractions et simulateurs et avons fini en faisant un petit tour en train permettant d'accéder à certaines parties des locaux en activité comme le centre de contrôle historique et le centre d'entraînement des astronautes, trés sympa!
English: On Monday, we visited the Houston Space Center located on the NASA grounds. We spent the day making the most of the different attractions and simulators and ended the day by taking the train tour that takes us around some of the NASA symbloc sites such as the historical mission control and the astronaut's training center, real nice!
Nous n'avions prévu de passer que 2-3 jours à Houston mais Percy et Amalia ont gentiment proposé que l'on reste jusqu'à mon anniversaire 2 jours plus tard, on a accepté avec plaisir. C'est donc entre amis que nous avons fêté mes 35 ans! Ce jour là, Léa, William et moi avons accompagné Anya & Alyssa à leur cours d'équitation, ce qui nous a beaucoup plu et nous avons fini la journée autour d'un délicieux repas préparé par Amalia... Une parfaite petite soirée pour clôturer ces 5 jours passés en leur compagnie... Merci encore à vous pour nous avoir si gentiment accueillis, d'avoir tant partagé avec nous et un merci tout particulier à Amalia pour avec fait de mon anniversaire une journée si spéciale... Les séparations ont une fois de plus été assez difficiles pour nous...
English: We had initially planned to only spend 2-3 days in Houston but Percy and Amalia kindly offered that we stay until my birthday 2 days later, we happily accepted. So it is among friends that I spent my 35th birthday! That day, Léa, William and I accompanied Anya & Alyssa to their horseriding class, which we really enjoyed and we ended the day around a delicious dinner prepared by Amalia... A perfect little evening to conclude the 5 nice days spent together.. Thanks again you guys for welcoming us so kindly, for sharing so much with us and a special thanks to Amalia for making my birthday so special... No need to say it was a bit hard to say goodbye...
Nous avons ensuite rejoint la Nouvelle Orléans; la maman de Percy y habite et nous a gentiment invité à rester chez elle le temps de notre séjour; elle n'était malheureusement pas présente ce week-end là, c'est donc Patrice, la soeur de Percy qui nous a accueilli. Nous avons passé une bonne soirée à faire connaissance et Patrice nous a indiqué toutes les choses à voir, à faire et à goûter à la Nouvelle Orléans... merci encore pour tous ces bons conseils!!
Notre premier jour dans la ville, nous avons commencé par la visite de l'insectarium pour le plus grand plaisir de Chris et des enfants! Le musée est trés bien fait avec de nombreux ateliers où l'on peut voir et même parfois toucher les différents insectes.
English: We then went to New Orleans; Percy's mom lives there and kindly invited us to stay at her house while we were in town; unfortunately she was out of town that week-end so it is Patrice, Percy's sister who welcomed us. We spent a nice evening with her getting to know each other and Patrice gave us lots of advice on the good things to see, do or taste while in New Orleans... Thanks again for all your good advice!!
On our first day in town, we started by visiting the Audubon Insectarium which made Chris & the kids super happy! The museum is really well done with many exhibits where you can see and even touch the different insects.
Nous nous sommes ensuite longuement promenés dans le 'Vieux carré', le centre historique de la ville à l'architecture si particulière et où les créoles francophones habitaient. Nous avons mangé des 'beignets' au fameux Café du Monde et avons écouté plusieurs groupes de jazz dans la rue avec beaucoup de plaisir...
English: We then went for a long walk around the 'French quarter', the historical center of the city with its distinctive archtiecture which is where the french-speaking creoles used to live. We ate 'beignets' at the well-known Café du Monde and had a great time listening to the different jazz bands playing on street corners...
Le deuxième jour, aprés avoir traversé le Mississipi avec le ferry d'Algiers, nous avons pris le streetcar (tram) de Canal Street jusqu'à son terminus pour visiter un des cimetières historiques de la ville. Les cimetières de la Nouvelle Orléans sont connus pour leurs tombeaux assez imposants qui sont de véritables monuments pour certains.
English: The second day, after crossing the Mississipi on the Algiers ferry, we hopped on the Canal street streetcar and rode it all the way to the end of the line to go and visit one of the city's historical cemeteries. New Orleans cemeteries are know for their impressive above-ground tombs that are often attractions to themselves.
Ensuite, nous n'avons pas résisté à l'envie de retourner nous ballader dans le vieux carré pour profiter une dernière fois des excellents groupes de jazz qui jouent à différents coins de rue, un vrai régal!!
English: After that, we couldn't resist the urge to go back for a walk in the French quarter to enjoy the excellent street jazz bands one last time, loved it!!!
La Nouvelle Orléans nous a beaucoup plu... Son architecture, son ambiance, sa culture créole, son jazz... sans oublier sa délicieuse cuisine... Un grand merci encore à Mme Rose et Patrice pour nous avoir accueillis avec tant de générosité!!! Nous vous attendons sur Paris l'année prochaine :)
Aprés la Nouvelle Orléans, nous sommes allés visiter une des nombreuses plantations de la région: la 'Laura Plantation', une plantation de canne à sucre située à environ 50km à l'ouest de la ville. Nous avons effectué une visite guidée trés intéressante (et en français...) retraçant l'histoire de la plantation, et permettant de visiter la demeure principale, les jardins et les maisons d'esclaves.
English: We really liked New Orleans... Its architecture, its ambiance, its creole culture, its jazz... and its delicious cuisine of course... A big thanks once again to Mrs Rose and to Patrice for welcoming us with such generousity!!! We expect to see you next year in Paris :)
After New Orleans, we went to visit one of the many plantations in the area: the Laura plantation, a sugar cane plantation located about 30 miles west of the city. We took a very interesting tour (in french...) that explained the plantation's history and that allowed us to visit the main house, the gardens and the slave cabins.
Pour remonter vers le nord-est nous avons décidé d'emprunter la Natchez Trace parkway, une route verdoyante qui longe la piste historique de transit empruntée par les amérindiens et les explorateurs et qui traverse le Mississipi, l'Alabama et termine dans le Tenessee.
English: To head towards the north-east we decided to drive up the Natchez Trace Parkway, a 444-mile scenic road that follows a historical path used by American indians and settlers and that drives through Mississipi and Alablama before ending in Tenessee.
De là, nous avons rejoint le parc national des Great Smoky Mountains situé au sud de la chaîne des Appalaches et qui est, en fait, le parc national le plus visité des Etats-Unis. Nous sommes restés 2 jours à parcourir les différentes routes du parc et à effectuer quelques randonnées.
English: From there we went to Great Smoky Mountains National park located south of the Appalachian moutains and that is, actually, the most visited national park in the United States. We stayed there 2 days driving along the different roads and hiking along some of the trails.
Nous avons ensuite emprunté la Blue Ridge parkway, une route panoramique qui longe la chaîne des Appalaches pour finalement rejoindre le parc national de Shenandoah.
English: We then followed the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic skyline drive that follows the Appalachian moutain range to finally end in Shenandoah National Park.
A notre arrivée au parc de Shenandoah, il y avait malheureusement un fort brouillard, nous n'avons donc pas pu profiter des différentes vues réputées magnifiques de la moitié sud du parc. Le soir, nous avons même du allumer le chauffage, la première fois depuis bien longtemps...Le lendemain, bien que le brouillard se soit levé, seules Léa et moi nous sommes senties d'attaque pour une petite randonnée, et bien nous en a pris car le point de vue sur la vallée de Shenandoah était magnifique!
English: Unfortunately, when we arrived in Shenadoah, it was very foggy so we were not able to fully enjoy the apparently beautiful different view points on the southern part of the park. That night we even had to turn the heat on, the first time in very long... The following day, even though the fog was gone, only Léa and I were motivated to go hiking, and we're glad we did because the view on the Shenandoah valley was just amazing!
De là nous nous sommes rendus à Washington, D.C. la trés connue capitale des Etats-Unis. Nous ne savions pas à quoi nous attendre et nous avons tout de suite été séduits par cette trés belle ville. Nous avons passé notre première journée à marcher autour du Capitole, de la cour Suprême, et tout le long du 'Mall' cette immense allée qui relie le Capitole au Washington Monument.
English: From there we went to Washington, D.C. the very famous U.S. capital city. We didn't know what to expect but we were charmed right away by this beautiful city. We spent our first day walking around the Capitol, the Supreme Court and all along the 'Mall', this huge and long avenue that goes from the Capitol to the Washington Monument.
L'après-midi nous étions invités à déjeuner par Cheryl, une cousine de Percy qui habite Washington et nous avons donc eu le plaisir de partager ce dimanche de Pâques avec elle, son mari Clarence, leur fils Bradford et leur filleul. Nous avons passé une excellente après-midi autour d'un délicieux repas et avons beaucoup échangés sur toutes sortes de sujets. Nous gardons un excellent souvenir de cette rencontre, merci encore d'avoir partagé ce temps de famille avec nous et nous espérons sincérement vous revoir à Paris dans le futur...
English: In the afternoon we were invited for dinner by Cheryl, Percy's cousin who lives in Washington and it is with great pleasure that we spent Easter Sunday with her, her husband Clarence, their son Bradford and her godson. We spent a great afternoon sharing a delicious meal and discussing all sorts of topics. We really loved meeting you and your family, thanks again for sharing this special family event with us and we sincerely hope you come to visit us in Paris some day...
Le lendemain, nous avons continué notre visite de Washington en nous rendant à la Maison Blanche. Bon, nous n'avons pas vu Obama mais nous avons bien vu les milliers de personnes venus faire, comme chaque année, la chasse aux oeufs de Pâques dans le jardin de la Maison Blanche, il y avait un monde fou!!
English: The next day, we continued our Washington tour and went to see the White Houste. Well, we didn't see Obama but we did see the thousands of people that came for the White House Easter Egg hunt, it was jam-packed!!
Washington est également célébre pour abriter les musées du Smithsonian Institution, une insitution qui prône 'la promotion et la diffusion du savoir' et regroupe 19 musées ou galeries qui ont l'avantage d'être gratuit, une chose assez rare aux Etats-Unis... Nous avons donc choisi de visiter le 'National Air & Space museum', qui retrace l'histoire de l'aviation et de la découverte de l'espace à travers des maquettes, des documents d'origine, des reconstitutions et une collection d'appareils aériens et spatiaux incroyable... un musée trés complet et trés instructif!!
English: Washington is also known for hosting the Smithsonian Institution museums, an institution which was founded for the 'increase and diffusion of knowledge' and that includes 19 museums or galleries that are all free, a rare thing in the U.S... We decided to visit the National Air & Space museum which holds the largest collection of historic aircrafts and spacecrafts in the world... a very complete and instructive museum!!
Aprés une petite journée de repos dans une forêt à proximité de Washington, nous avons repris la route pour nous rendre à New York. Nous nous sommes installés dans un camping de Jersey City, juste en face de l'île de Manhattan, et à quelques stations de métro seulement, bien pratique... A notre arrivée, nous sommes allés nous ballader au Liberty state park offrant une vue assez sympa sur Manhattan... puis nous sommes sagement rentrés histoire de bien nous reposer avant les 2 journées de marathon qui nous attendaient.
English: After a little day's break in a forest near Washington, we hit the road again towards New York City. We found an RV park in Jersey City, right across from Manhattan, only a few train stops away from the city center, very convenient... When we arrived, we went for a walk in Liberty State park from where there's a great view on Manhattan... we then headed home in order to save some energy for the 2-day marathon ahead of us.
New York Jour 1 - Programme du jour: Lower Manhattan! Nous avons commencé par une ballade dans le quartier du World Trade Center où nous avons pu voir la future tour en construction, puis nous avons arpenté les rues étroites et toutes en hauteurs du quartier de Wall Street...

Nous avons ensuite longé les quais jusqu'au port historique de la ville, au niveau du Pier 17, où l'on a pu admirer plusieurs voiliers amarrés...

Puis, nous avons commençé la traversée du mythique pont de Brooklyn, mais juste 'commençé'... on a pas trop senti les enfants d'attaque pour les 4km aller-retour...

Nous avons ensuite continué par la traversée de Chinatown et Little Italy, tout en couleurs et trés typiques!!

Et tout ça à pied et sans broncher!!! Même petit Thomas... on a vraiment été impressionnés par les km que nos loulous ont parcourus ce jour là avec leurs petites jambes... de futurs marathoniens :)
English: And all this by foot and without complaining!!! Even little Thomas... we were really impressed by the number of miles our little ones walked that day considering their little legs... future marathon runners :)
New York Jour 2 - Programme du jour: Statue de la Liberté & Midtown! Nous ne pouvions décemment pas visiter New York sans aller rendre visite à la Statue de la Liberté... William, surtout, nous le demandait depuis notre arrivée. Ce fût donc la première étape de notre 2éme journée marathon... Une trés looongue étape, car les queues n'en finissaient plus... celle pour acheter les tickets, celle pour passer la sécurité, celle pour monter sur le bateau, mais nous avons finalement réussi à voir cette mytique statue de plus prés... et en prime la magnifique vue sur Manhattan que l'on a de l'île où elle se trouve.
English: New York Day 2 - Plan of the day: Statue of Liberty & Midtown! We could not decently visit New York and not go see the statue of Liberty... William in particular had been asking to see it since we had arrived. So that was the first step of our 2nd marathon day... A veeeery long one too, the waiting lines kept piling up... the ticket booth waiting line, the security waiting line, the 'getting on the boat' waiting line... but we finally were able to reach the island and have a closer look at this mythical statue... and as a bonus a great view of Manhattan.
De retour à Manhattan, nous nous sommes un peu balladés dans Battery Park avant de prendre un bus qui remontait Broadway. Nous sommes descendus à Time Square, la place aux milles néons...

De là, nous avons remonté la 42e rue pour aller voir la gare Grand Central Terminal, la gare la plus importante du monde en nombre de quais et immédiatement reconnue par Léa et William comme "la gare de Madagascar" (le dessin animé)... ben oui! à chacun ses références...
English: From there, we walked up 42nd street to go and see Grand Central Terminal, the largest train station in the world by the number of platforms and immediately identified by Léa and William as 'the Madagascar train station' (the cartoon)... well! I guess we don't have the same references...
Et finalement, nous avons remonté la trés célèbre 5éme avenue jusqu'au Rockfeller Center, où nous sommes montés au 70ème étage pour admirer le soleil se coucher tout doucement sur les grattes-ciels de la ville. Une belle façon de terminer notre visite de New York!!!
English: And finally, we walked up the famous 5th Avenue all the way to Rockfeller Center, where we climbed to the 70th floor to admire the sun slowly going down on the city's highrises. A nice way to end our New Yor visit!!
